Fishing Lord Howe Island

How to get to Lord Howe Island

Is it possible that Lord Howe Island is the best kept secret in the world? I could be so because it hasn’t been that long ago since you were able to access it by airplane. It’s not what you would call a highly developed island, and for all its beauty and wonder, let’s hope it stays that way.

Being one of the places that you should include in your travel plans, and fishing plans, Lord Howe Island isn’t exactly a cab ride away from Australia. You will need a little more preparation than that. However, don’t let that scare you off. Now, the island has better accessibility and it’s much easier to get to your desired location. Once you get there, you’ll learn the island is not that big anyway – at least not in size; but it’s big in beauty.

Now, when I tell you that Lord Howe Island is off the coast of Eastern Australia, you might say, “Oh, that’s not bad. Where exactly is it?” Well, how about 600 kilometers away from the Eastern coast of Australia – that’s 373 miles: a pretty long swim.

Lord Howe Island is an island territory of New South Wales, Australia located in the Tasman Sea. It currently has a population of around 350 people and limits tourists to around 400 at a time.

If you want to get there some other way than by swimming or canoe, you will need to plan a flight. It takes about 2 hours to fly there on flights from Sydney, Port Macquarie, or Brisbane. If you live in other parts of Australia, you can catch connecting flights from most of the major cities. It can be a bit pricey, but it’s well worth it.

In fact, back in the day, they couldn’t even fly into the island because there was no air strip, so you had to make it in buy airplane boats. Considering that it’s a about a 2 hour flight, you would be wise to spend several days or even a couple weeks there visiting. There are so many things to do you will soon find that you have run out of time and still not enjoyed all that’s available to you.

Once you do get there, you’ll find some nice accommodations to stay in and some fine restaurants for dining, but you’ll want to spend most of your time out and about getting to know the area. Be sure to take a good camera and plenty of film.
